Where the money goes

The Foundation donates funds to support projects and organisations in line with its mission, to support sustainability from a holistic perspective, promoting ecological, climatic and social sustainability.

Any money associated with awards or prizes Greta receives is donated to the Foundation. The Foundation donates all such funds to support causes in line with its mission. As per October 2022, the Foundation has received EUR 1,235,000 in award and prize money and donated EUR 1,235,000 (taking exchange rates and bank transfer fees into account). Below you can find a list of the Foundation's outgoing donations.

Essential running costs such as administration, due diligence, accounting, auditing and legal services are covered by a part of the received donations and royalties.

    Fridays for Future UN Bonn Climate Change Conference 2023

    The Foundation is donating EUR 44,827 to Climate2025 in order to support climate activists from Fridays For Future to go the 2023 Bonn intersessional sessions which are held in preparation for the next COP. This donation aims to help climate justice voices be heard early in the COP28 process.

    International Organisation for Migration

    The Foundation is donating EUR 275,000 to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for their work supporting the needs of people displaced by climate-driven extreme weather, especially in Pakistan and Somalia. In Pakistan, IOM aims to reach over 1.3 million persons affected by the catastrophic floods. In Somalia, IOM has reached over 400,000 people displaced internally by the historic drought caused by four consecutive failed rainy seasons.

    Support to Sámi people's legal challenge to the Gállok iron ore mine in Sweden

    The Foundation is donating SEK 2,000,000 to the Indigenous Jåhkåganska Sámi community in Jokkmokk municipality in the north of Sweden. The financial donation will support the Sámi communities legal fight against the Swedish government's decision to allow an iron mine in Gállok. Indigenous peoples comprise less than 5% of the world population, but safeguard 80% of the Earth's biodiversity.

    The Foundation is donating EUR 100,000 to Climate 2025 to support youth climate activists from MAPA (Most Affected People and Areas) to attend COP27 in Egypt. This donation aims to help voices to be heard from the areas most affected by the climate crisis, as they are historically underrepresented in the climate debate.

    Supporting UNICEF's work to tackle the malnutrition crisis

    The Foundation is donating EUR 275,000 to support UNICEF's work to tackle the global malnutrition crisis. The donation will help children get access to food, clean water, health care and sanitation in areas affected by climate-driven extreme weather, conflict and rising food prices, for example in the Horn of Africa and in Pakistan.

    Book royalties to six non-profit organisations

    The Foundation is donating the full amount related to royalties after tax, SEK 3,439,238, from the book “Scener ur hjärtat” / “Our House is on Fire”, in line with the foreword of the book, to six organisations: Greenpeace, WWF, Lära med Djur, Fältbiologerna, Naturskyddsföreningen, and Djurens Rätt.

    Humanitarian aid to people impacted by armed conflicts

    The Foundation is donating a sum of SEK 1,000,000 (~EUR 93,600) to four leading international organisations working to support people suffering from the consequences of armed conflict, with the war in Ukraine only the latest, tragic example. Civilians, and especially children, suffer the worst effects of armed conflicts and the UNHCR estimates that more than 100 million people globally are currently displaced from their homes.

    The Foundation is donating SEK 100,000 (~EUR 9,650) to Eco-Sud Mauritius for their oil spill cleaning work after the oil tanker MV Wakashio ran aground off the coast of Mauritius on 25 July. Eco-Sud is an environmental NGO created by the citizens of Blue Bay-Mahébourg over 20 years ago in order to protect the environment and the biodiversity of Mauritius for the generations of today and tomorrow.

    The Foundation is donating NOK 250,000 to Foreningen Grunnloven §112, an umbrella organisation that coordinates the People vs Arctic Oil case. The case aims to use legal means to stop the Norwegian government from expanding oil production in the Arctic area.
