Donation to combat disastrous oil spill in Mauritius

The Greta Thunberg Foundation will donate SEK 100,000 (approximately EUR 10,000) to Eco-Sud Mauritius for their oil spill cleaning work after the oil tanker MV Wakashio ran aground off the coast of Mauritius on 25 July. The oil spill has been described as the worst environmental disaster in the history of Mauritius, as more than 1,000 tonnes of oil spilled out into the sensitive marine environment.

The donation from the Greta Thunberg Foundation has been made possible by the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity, awarded to Greta in July 2020.

Eco-Sud is an environmental NGO created by the citizens of Blue Bay-Mahébourg over 20 years ago in order to protect the environment and the biodiversity of Mauritius for the generations of today and tomorrow. Eco-Sud is running a crowdfunding campaign to support the oil cleaning work: https://www.crowdfund.mu/mauritius-oil-spill-cleaning-2020-mv-wakashio-306.html.
